Dewsbury success for West End pair

Workmates Aaron Schnacke and Rob Turner are a pretty potent combination when they play golf together.

The West End pair, who teed off 80 minutes after a speculative entry request, took the am-am honours in the second Halifax-Huddersfield Alliance of the season at Dewsbury on Thursday.

The duo scored 42 points to pip Ryburn’s Ray Attiwell (10) and Andrew Smith (17) on countback.

Turner, who plays off six, is the head greenkeeper at West End. Schnacke, whose plus two handicap illustrates his status as one of the top amateurs in the area, also works on the greens staff at the Norton Tower club.

The pair each scored on nine holes with Schnacke’s eagle on the par four 15th the highlight until they came to the short last.

It was the final tee shot from Schnacke, who heads to Askham Bryan College in York this week in the quest for a green keeping qualification, which earned them the honours.

Turner said: “He almost had a hole in one. He hit a little wedge and the ball rolled back to 18 inches. That birdie won it for us.”

The next Alliance is at West End on Tuesday, October 27 but Turner reckons that while Schnacke may take part, he will be a doubtful starer due to work commitments.

Tom Wild of Bradley Park and Oliver Shaw (5) of Crosland Heath won the pro-am with 43 points, one ahead of Dave Astin and Tony Tighe (14) of Elland.

The early starters, which included both pro-am prize winners, had a few showers to contend with but conditions became dryer and sunnier.

The course was soft and the receptive greens were reasonably fast.

Other eagles or nett eagles came from Wild, Tighe James Ward, Attiwell, Jonathan Binns, Dave Knapton, Phil Sellen, Dave Oldham, Nigel Nuttall, Trevor Williams, Mark Rooney and Mick Haigh.

The next Alliance is at West End Golf Club on Tuesday, 27 October.
