East coast raiders beat Brods

Scarborough opted to play up the slope in relatively good conditions and Brods took the game to the visitors with the assistance of a light breeze.

The visitors took the lead against the run of play after 10 minutes when Brods lost possession in midfield and Scarborough No 8 Isaac Famau broke away, well supported by open side flanker Drew Govier who touched down under the posts. That provided an easy conversion for fullback Tom Ratcliffe.

The visitors enjoyed a good spell of pressure and only resolute defence from Brods kept them out until a penalty provided relief.

Brods responded well with Ben Barron’s pace troubling the seasiders on several occasions.

On 27 minutes the now dominant Brods pack were rewarded for their efforts. From a scrum 15 metres out Luke Scrimshaw picked up at the back and fed scrum half Dom Georgiou, who broke blind and found Manu, who finished well in the left hand corner.

The conversion from the touchline was missed but Brods took the game to the visitors again from the kick off and camped on the Scarborough line. In spite of success in the scrum and line out they were unable to break down the visitors.

As the weather started to deteriorate, Scarborough extended their lead with a penalty and both sides fled to the dressing room as the ref blew for half time.

Brods now faced the elements with horizontal sleet and snow plus a gale force wind. Handling was difficult and the game deteriorated into a game of midfield attrition in the freezing conditions.

Brods found it hard to escape from their own half and although they had a spell on the Scarborough line when conditions improved, the visitors sealed victory with a try from the influential Famau.
