Brooksby and Stead in top form

Luke Brooksby had a superb match as Illingworth maintained their promotion drive in Division Three of the Aire/Wharfe League with a 63-run success over Woodhouse.

Their prospects looked gloomy when opening bowler Saeed Mohammad (seven for 55) left them on the ropes at 49 for seven in Leeds.

However, Brooksby (57) and James Lawton (37) launched a counter-attack, their 91-run stand plus extras from last pair Jamie Moorhouse (15 no) and Liam Kelly (11) helping boost the total to 178.

Brooksby followed up with five for 19 and Woodhouse, 15 for four at one stage, only got to 116 thanks to number six Qamar Shahzad’s 50.

Alex Stead was in masterful form as Lightcliffe beat visitors Morley by 79 runs to go fifth in the Bradford League’s top flight.

Stead hit 152 off 143 balls and was the man mainly responsible for helping the Wakefield Road side post 280 for six.

His flashing blade produced nine sixes and 13 fours and he shared century stands with Michael Brooke (55) for the second wicket and Suleman Khan (28) for the fourth wicket.

Spinners Chris Greenwood, Khan and Daanyaal Ahmed each took three wickets in reply but opener Matthew West defied the home attack for a long time with 94 and Morley finished on 201 for nine.

Calderdale’s other Bradford League side, Brighouse, also had a century-maker as they bagged an 82-run win over Spen Victoria which lifted them to eighth in Division Two.

Zahir Hussain batted the full 50 overs, hitting 16 fours and one six in an unbeaten 115. His main support came from Tahir Khan (46 no) as Brighouse posted 226 for six.

Fakhar Hussain (four for 34) and Johannes Van Ee (three for 18) helped dismiss Spen for 144.

Leg spinner Chris Williams and young ex-Sowerby batsman Luke Bridges helped Barkisland to a fine three-wicket win at Delph and Dobcross in the Huddersfield League’s top flight.

Williams, a newcomer to Woodfield this season, took seven for 43 as Delph & Dobcross were limited to 156.

Lancashire all-rounder Arron Lilley took six for 57 to hit back for the home side but Bridges hit a fine unbeaten 55 and Aussie LJ Brown 36 as Barkisland consolidated their position in the top half of the table.

Darren Robinson’s side went above Elland, who took only one point from a high-scoring game at mid-table Kirkburton.

Charlie Roebuck started the season at Lightcliffe but he is now back at Kirkburton and he fell a boundary short of a century to help the home side to an imposing 297 for eight. Ibrar Latif (74) also made the visiting attack toil.

Elland produced a solid response, spearheaded by Fahid Rehman (64) and Ashton Blakey (40), son of former Yorkshire and England player Richard who helps behind the scenes at the Hullen Edge club.

However, they restricted to 248 for eight with Indian Iqbal Khan, better known for his batting, taking six for 87.

Northowram Fields lost the joint leadership of the Championship in the Central Yorkshire League when their five-match winning run was ended by a 23-run defeat at Buttershaw St Pauls.

Chris Thompson’s side looked set to follow up an earlier home win over their rivals when they reduced the hosts to 83 for six in the 21st over but young opener Kevin McDermott (95) at last found a willing partner in Ian Carradice (30) and they added 105 to help lift the St Pauls total to 193.

Paceman Josh Bennett Keer finished with five for 68.

Robert Larner played a similar role to McDermott at the top of the visitors’ order, hitting 100 off 137 balls.

Larner and Paul Flesher (22) - one of several players drafted in due to absentees - helped Northowram to 90 for one but the visitors collapsed to 115 for eight.

Larner and Dewsbury RL coach Glen Morrison (21) added 55 but both were bowled within four balls to end the match with Larner last out.

Todmorden warmed up for today’s Lancashire League match at home to East Lancs with an exciting one run win at Colne in the Twenty/20 competition on Friday.

Elliott Gilford (37), Zeshan Shoukhat (27 no) helped them to 132 for six and that was just enough.

Colne needed eight off the last over and three off the last ball but visiting pro Michael Neser held his nerve.
