Organisers said around 1,300 people helped raise more than £75,000 for Cancer Research UK by completing either a 5k or 10k course around the park.

Lisa Millett, senior press officer for Cancer Research UK, said: “It has been a great day once again in Halifax.

“I think we are looking at the event raising £75,000 which for Halifax is a massive amount.”

Miss Millett said there was torrential rain this morning as organisers were setting up the track and stage.

But as the women lined up for the warm up routine the sun shone and transformed the park into a colourful scene.

She said: “The Race for Life events are always emotional because everybody has their own motivation and stories behind why they’re taking part.
