Calderdale gyms reopening is a ‘weight off’, says owner

Calderdale Council has said it will hold off from opening its facilities until it can do so ‘safely’, which includes Brighouse Swimming Pool and Fitness Centre; Sowerby Bridge Pool and Fitness Centre; Todmorden Sports Centre and H alifax Swimming Pool, North Bridge Leisure Centre, Queen’s Road Gym, and Mixenden Activity Centre, all Halifax.

However, for private gym owners, the Government’s annoucement allowing indoor sports facilities to reopen on July 25 following the easing of coronavirus lockdown restrictions, is a ‘weight off’ their minds.

Derrick Clarke, owner of Gemini Fitness, on Square Road, said: “It’s a weight off to hear we’re allowed to reopen., but it was dissapointing to see pubs and bars reopened first.

“I feel people are more likely to break social distancing rules if they’ve got alcohol in their system, compared to if they are exercising and concentrating, while keeping fit.

“I’ve got all the PPE stocked, but when our clients do return all I’m asking from them is common sense.

“By this I mean have your mask ready and clean all the machines and weights after use.”

The council said it is preparing to reopen its gyms, pools and leisure centres, and is working through which aspects can be opened up safely and how to do it.

Coun Susan Press, Cabinet for Public Services and Communities, said: “Our services remain under regular review and we’ll consider reopening our buildings and restarting services when we’re confident it’s safe to do so.”

Calderdale Council said play areas and outdoor gyms could re-open from last Friday after an easing of restrictions was announced by the Government.
