Updated: 21-year-old man killed in Elland car crash is named

The 21-year-old man killed in a fatal car crash in Elland on Friday morning has been named.

Jamie Baines, of Greenwood Street, Huddersfield, was driving a black coloured BMW when it collided with a tree on Calderdale Way.

Following the incident, the front seat passenger - a 24-year-old man - was left with serious injuries. He was in a critical but stable condition in hospital.

Two other males, both 18, suffered minor injuries.

Police have confirmed that the BMW was stolen and the owner has been informed.

On Friday police issued an appeal for witnesses to the crash, which happened at 1.15am to come forward.

Detective Sergeant Carole Greaves of the Major Collision Enquiry Team, said: “Enquiries are ongoing into what has clearly been a very serious incident and we are appealing for anyone who saw the collision or the events leading up to it.

“We would also like to speak with anyone who saw the BMW in the moments leading up to the incident.

“Extensive enquiries remain ongoing and anyone who has information should contact the Major Collision Enquiry Team on 101.”
