Man rescued after crashing into tree in Todmorden

Calder Valley Search and Rescue Team (CVSRT) members were called to free the mountain biker following the crash on the downhill section of the MTB course in Portsmouth on Saturday.

The CVSRT doctor and paramedics, who had been called by Yorkshire Ambulance Service, helped to treat the man who gained consciousness at the scene but was still very ill.

Due to the steep, densely wooded location of the crash, the North West Air Ambulance (NWAA) wasn’t able to land nearby, so the helicopter touched down in a clearing on top of the hill.

Once the casualty was stable, he was loaded into the vacuum mattresses, then onto a stretcher and carried to the land ambulance, before being transferred to the air ambulance.

The man was taken to hospital for a CT scan, but was later released having suffered minor concussion.

To allow the emergency services to carry out their work Burnley Road had to be closed.

A CVSRT spokesperson said: “We would like to thank the local motorists who were delayed during this incident, for their patience and understanding.”
