Calderdale rail services to be scrutinised by council board

A panel of Councillors will be discussing the key issues and challenges that are currently facing rail in Calderdale.

They will also look to identify and assess how Calderdale could benefit from initiatives to invest in and improve rail services at a national, regional and local level.

This review is being undertaken during a time of unprecedented change for rail services across the North of England, which has impacted communities across the region, including rail users in Calderdale.

Calderdale Council’s Chair of the Place Scrutiny Board, Councillor George Robinson, said: “A well-functioning rail network increases economic activity, generates opportunities, and creates social value.

“This review comes at a pivotal time, as our rail network faces substantial changes in the near future.

“As part of this review we will be interviewing a range of industry leading experts, including commercial professionals, community leaders, and academics.

“Our findings will have the potential to influence Calderdale’s transport links for future generations, and ensure that the rail network is on the right track.”

The meeting will take place at Halifax Town Hall from 9.30am until 4pm on March 18 and alongside the panel, representatives from a number of key agencies will also be present, including:

Network Rail

Northern Rail

Transport for the North

West Yorkshire Combined Authority

Transport for Greater Manchester

There will also be a strong local community presence at the session, including representation from the Upper Calder Valley Renaissance Sustainable Travel Group, Halifax and District Rail Users Group, Friends of Mytholmroyd Station and Friends of Hebden Bridge Station.
