Supermarket plan for former mill site in village

Plans have been submitted to Calderdale Council to redevelop the former Clifton Mills site in Bailiff Bridge, Brighouse .

The application made by planning agents Savills on behalf of ML (Wooler) Limited would see a ‘national multiple convenience goods retailer’ move onto the site and create a minimum of 25 jobs.

The planning agents said in their report: “The proposal will bring back into use a vacant and brownfield site in the urban area of Bailiff Bridge.

“The application seeks permission to enable a vacant brownfield site to be redeveloped to provide a small scale neighbourhood convenience foodstore that will be occupied by a national multiple convenience goods retailer.

“The location of the building is sited at the north east corner of the site to meet commercial requirements to enhance the visibility of the store onto Bradford Road and Birkby Lane.

“Additionally, the siting means that views up Bradford Road to the listed building to the rear of the site are maintained.

“The proposal will have significant community and economic benefits through enhancing the vitality of Bailiff Bridge by enhancing consumer choice and providing a retail facility in a sustainable and accessible location in the central urban area of the settlement, creating a number of new jobs and generate earnings.”

The brownfield site has been vacant since 2009 and the proposed 1,045sq.m store will be located to the north east of the land.

If approved, vehicles will gain access to the small-scale neighbourhood foodstore from Bradford Road.

The store will provide 66 car parking spaces, including six number disabled parking spaces.

A new retail park is currently being built in the Hipperholme and Lightcliffe ward less than half a mile away on the former Dews Garage site on Bradford Road.

Pets at Home to occupy the balance of space at its new 33,500 sq ft scheme under development.

Developers Gregory Property Group hope to complete the work by September 2016.

Plans were approved for the development in May 2015 by Calderdale Council and will feature 99 parking spaces.
