Calderdale Council has said repairs to the bridge, which is a listed structure, are now complete but damage was caused by vehicles.

Mark Thompson, Calderdale Council’s director of economy and environment, said: “To prevent further damage we are progressing a Traffic Regulation Order (TRO) to enable us to narrow the road to stop vehicles using the bridge.

“The new road built as part of the Sowerby Bridge Copley Valley development scheme provides much improved and safer transport links. “The TRO has been advertised and we are now in a 21 day consultation period which gives people the chance to comment on the proposals. If no objections are received, the narrowing works will move forward. The bridge will remain closed until the outcome of the TRO process.”
