Happy Valley: Arson probe and body found in latest episode

We're now halfway through the second series of Happy Valley and as the story unfolds, it gets harder to wait another week for the next instalment of the gritty drama.

Episode three picked up two weeks after DS John Wadsworth brutally murdered his scorned ex-lover Vicky with a telephone wire after she blackmailed him and threatened to go public with their affair.

An investigation begins into an arson attack on a flat in Ripponden as Vicky’s body is found in an abandoned building near Brighouse.

John begins to sweat as the grisly discovery is made and in flashbacks it’s revealed he started the fire deliberately to cover his tracks.

But that was only after he went all the way to mimic the previous murders, smashing a bottle to mutilate Vicky after he had strangled her.

Now plucky PCSO Anne Gallagher, who has grand ambitions of becoming a detective, has put two and two together to link the arson attack and the discovery of Vicky’s body, could John’s game soon be up?

His situation was made all the more desperate after the bleak realisation that he needn’t have gone to such great lengths to silence Vicky as his own wife was also uncovered as an adulterer.

Meanwhile. Catherine was threatened with medical retirement unless she, begrudgingly, underwent counselling to talk through her issues, sinister Frances visited Tommy Lee Royce, who is more determined than ever to get to his son Ryan, and the trafficker tasered by Catherine was found hanging from a tree in Crow Wood Park, Sowerby Bridge.

In next week’s episode, Sean Balmforth (Matthew Lewis) becomes prime suspect when a prostitute is brutally raped, leading authorities to suspect he could be responsible for the string of murders, John has to think fast when he’s asked why his number was on Vicky’s phone and a gift for Ryan on his tenth birthday reminds Catherine that danger may be closer than she thinks...
