Halifax lap dancing club La Salsa makes new bid for licence

Calderdale Council’s Licensing and Regulatory Committee refused to renew the licence for La Salsa, Silver Street, Halifax, last December.

But following an appeal by the establishment’s owners to Magistrates Court and a letter of claim to the council, it has been agreed councillors should consider the matter again and will do so next Thursday, March 7, at Halifax Town Hall (6pm).

When refusing the licence renewal councillors did so on grounds they felt Mr Reza Shahsavar was unsuitable to hold a licence and a sex entertainment premises at Silver Street would be inappropriate having regard to the character of the relevant locality.

The committee had heard the club was opposite a women’s refuge.

Since councillors made their decision and following the appeal, the club has been able to continue operating and will be permitted to do so until the matter is finally concluded, says the briefing paper for committee members.

Last year the council adopted a new policy on licensing of sex establishments, drawing on recommendations from Government.

Initially last year they approved the licensing of La Salsa, but full Calderdale Council asked for the committee to look at the decision again, whereupon they decided on a refusal.
