Gold medals aplenty at the mini-Olympics

Year 2 children from seven Calder High feeder schools took part in the games at Burnley Road primary school, Mytholmroyd.

The others taking part were Heptonstall, Hebden Royd, Central Street, Stubbings, Cragg Vale and Luddenden Dene.

Youngsters from each school were put into teams representing some of the countries whose athletes will be training in Yorkshire in the run-up to next year’s London Games.

Among the nations they were flying the flag for were China, Brazil, Serbia, Australia, the Netherlands, and the USA, which won overall.

An egg and spoon race, water-carrying challenge and “pick up the points” game were all part of the fun - and even teachers joined in with a spacehopper dash at the end of the day.

Calder High School sports coordinator Mary Smith, who organised the event, said: “It was a multi-skills, fun event and the kids got to mix with children from other schools while doing all sorts of activities.

“It was just crazy but great, and really inspired everyone for the Olympics.”

Mrs Smith thanked parents and staff for their support, as well as ASDA in Thrum Hall, Halifax, who donated cakes.
