First launch new poster campaign

First in Calderdale has donated nearly £5,000 of advertising space on its buses to help launch a poster campaign highlighting the dangers of prostate cancer.

One man dies every hour from prostate cancer in the UK, and the campaign is designed to raise awareness of what bus passengers and the general public can do to put a stop to it.

Over 1,000 men in Yorkshire die from prostate cancer each year while one in eight men across the UK are diagnosed with the disease at some stage in their lives.

Prostate Cancer UK was chosen as FirstGroup’s Charity of Choice partners following a vote of 25,000 employees from its rail, tram and bus operations across the UK, including colleagues at First Bus in Calderdale. The three year partnership, which began in April 2015, aims to raise £1m in cash to help more men survive prostate cancer and enjoy a better quality of life.

Managing director of First West Yorkshire, Paul Matthews, said: “We are proud to support Prostate Cancer UK and delighted to feature the provocative and powerful posters.

“Key aims of our partnership with Prostate Cancer UK are to ensure First Bus employees, customers and the wider community know their risk of prostate cancer, raising awareness of the disease and the support available from the charity.

Angela Culhane, chief executive at Prostate Cancer UK, said: “It is fantastic to see our adverts displayed on buses in Calderdale, and we are very grateful to First Bus for donating this space.”
