Day three completed for cyclists: Cycle raises money for apprenticeships

The group of seven cyclists are cycling from Lands End to John O’Groats to raise £100,000 to fund 25 apprenticeships in Calderdale.

They have already completed 263 miles of their ride and will do another 90 miles today.

Before setting off on their journey on Friday the team announced that they had already reached their target.

On Tuesday they will be joined by the Mayor of Calderdale, Coun John Hardy, Halifax Town Crier Les Cutts and teachers and students from Ravenscliffe School. The team will be cycling through Calderdale from noon at Walsden, through Todmorden, Hebden Bridge, Mytholmroyd and into Halifax.

Steve Duncan, from Community Foundation for Calderdale, said they had a wonderful send off from Land’s End after coach of people formed lines either side of the riders and cheered and waved them off.

He said day two was the most difficult due to some hard climbs and last night left them speechless due to the combination of hills and distance.

“I think it’s interesting that all the riders have different styles of riders and particular strengths – I’ve gone from dreading hills and plodding my way up them to attacking the hills and getting up them as quick as I can. I get out of my saddle now which makes a difference to speed and preserves a bit of energy,” he said.
