Burglary figures: Calderdale police say figure is lowest in West Yorkshire

Police in Calderdale have said they are committed to ensuring burglary rates continue to decrease and remain the lowest in West Yorkshire.

This follows figures published earlier this week from the Office for National Statistics showed that there were 1,699 household break-ins between April 2017 and March 2018, meaning eight out of every 1,000 people in Calderdale reported a burglary in that time.

Detective Chief Inspector David Shaw, of Halifax CID, said: “We would strongly dispute the figures in relation to Calderdale’s burglary rate.

“Calderdale, compared to all of the other five districts in West Yorkshire, has the lowest rate for residential burglary and third lowest for community and business burglaries. Calderdale’s residential burglary rates has seen a reduction of 63 per cent compared to last year and commercial burglary is down by 92 per cent.

“Burglary remains a key area for West Yorkshire Police and Calderdale District and a variety of work and proactive operations have been carried out which has brought the significant reductions. Also, recent changes to the way we record crime have generally seen crime figures increase and budget cuts we are working with less money and fewer officers and staff than in previous years.

“We are committed to ensuring our burglary rates continue to decrease and we also ensure that our officers provide any support to victims of burglary, as we are acutely aware of the trauma and loss people endure due to this type of crime.”
