In a statement on Facebook, the venue said:" The Acapulco Nightclub as many people know is the oldest night club in history with some of the most loyal customers ever and in some cases often their parents met here. The Acapulco has been a family run business for almost 60 years. Whilst this has not been an easy decision to make and with a heavy heart, we have decided to make this weekend our last weekend. We will be closing temporarily until after the current situation is contained.

"We have made this decision with the interest of the health of our staff, customers and their families, including ultimately the general public of Halifax and the surrounding areas. We ourselves being local people hold Halifax dearly in our hearts.

"We are hoping that by giving this notice, our staff and the people who have already made arrangements for this coming weekend are not affected."

The statement went on to say that it hopes other local pubs and clubs will follow suit and close their doors until further notice.

It read: "We also hope by us taking this action it gives our fellow Pubs, clubs and restaurants, etc time to follow our actions and close there doors in the hope it will save lives. This is far more important than profit in our opinion.

"So this being our last weekend we urge you to use the hand sanitisers and additional washing facilities which will be available on entry and around the club. Door staff will be checking temperatures using non-contact thermometers on entry and anyone with a high temperature will be refused entry. Please do not risk the health of others if you feel at all unwell.

"We urge all of our wonderful staff and customers to stay safe and try look after each other, especially the older or weaker people within our community. Only buy the essentials you need and give those more vulnerable the opportunity to shop for what they need, when they need it.

"Hopefully in the not too distant future, when things are back to normal we will be seeing your smiling faces once again."
