Along with Halifax, Elland is one of the towns to progress to the second phase of the government’s multi-million Future High Streets fund, aimed at transforming high streets across the country.

Calderdale Council, with support from Bond Bryan Architects and project management company Turner & Townsend, has now developed a series of proposals for the regeneration of the Elland town centre.

A wide variety of ideas are being put forward for consideration including the addition of pedestrianised areas and landscaping around Southgate, upgrades to the high street, new housing and plans to breathe new life into the town’s historic buildings.

The Council is asking people to have their say on the proposals, to ensure they meet the needs of local communities.

Calderdale Council’s Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Resources, Councillor Jane Scullion, said: “Elland has a lot to offer as a town, with some wonderful heritage features and some great independent shops and businesses.

“We were delighted that our initial submission to the Future High Streets fund was successful last year. We’re now at the stage when we can share some ideas to help improve the look and feel of the town centre.

“Of course, it’s a difficult time to carry out a consultation and to forecast what the future will look like for our high streets. However, we’re doing all we can to ensure that people can still have their say on our proposals, which look to better connect the features of the town and harness its potential to grow and flourish, whatever the future brings.”

Due to the coronavirus outbreak, the consultation will be carried out virtually, with a questionnaire available online at http://calderdalenextchapter.co.uk/projects/elland-future-high-street-fund from Wednesday 13 May 2020.

If any assistance is required filling in the questionnaire, residents should contact the Council’s Contact Centre on 01422 288001.

All questionnaires need to be received by Friday 22 May 2020.

Initial agreed proposals will be used to produce a full business case which will be submitted to government by July 2020.
