Aldi is ready to press on after court verdict

Plans for a new Aldi store in Birds Royd Lane that would create more jobs were put on hold in March after a rival developer appealed a High Court ruling.

After numerous court hearings involving challenges from developer Younger Homes Northern Ltd, work looks like it can finally begin.

Mike Clarke, Property Director at Aldi, said: “Last week, Calderdale Magistrates’ Court heard Aldi’s case regarding the stopping up of a highway, which was the final barrier to delivering the proposed store on Birds Royd Lane.

“The court delivered a judgement in Aldi’s favour, which means we can now move forwards with our store development plans.

“Aldi is very pleased that this dispute has now been resolved. We’ve received great support from the local community, and despite the fact there will be a delay, Aldi is looking forward to construction commencing on the site in the near future.”

The plans will see the buildings at Calderbank House, 9a Birds Royd Lane, Princess Works and Royd House demolished.

When the proposals were submitted they were disputed by Morrisons supermarket and by the Brighouse Business Initiative, who objected to the plans on the grounds that the site was too far from the town centre and there was a preferable alternative at Sugden’s Mill. However, the supermarket was granted planning permission last year following a meeting of the Calderdale Council planning committee on May 28, 2013.
