Fun children’s shows are the cat’s whiskers

There will be plenty of opportunities to introduce young children to the magic of theatre and keep them entertained at Square Chapel arts centre, Halifax this autumn.

Family shows such as ‘Puss in Boots’, ‘A Mermaid’s Tale’, ‘Gulliver’ and ‘Old Mother Hubbard and Her Cupboard’ will provide a feast of fun and enthrall young audiences.

Half-term entertainment for the family will be provided by CBeebies’ Patrick Lynch as he brings the story of ‘Puss in Boots’ to life on Sunday, October 25 at 2.30pm.

Using smoke, mirrors, puppets and hidden trapdoors, he will show how the sure-footed feline fools the king and the ogre to put his master at the top. The show is aimed at families and children aged 4-plus.

On Wednesday, October 28, the hilarious and madcap adventures of ‘Gulliver’ are brought to the stage by Big Telly Theatre Company.

Suitable for children aged 8-plus, the show uses participatory theatre, visual imagery, film and puppetry to explore a strange new world where weird is the new ‘normal’.

The fun continues at Square Chapel on Sunday, November 8 when Ripstop Theatre presents ‘A Real Mermaid’s Tale’.

It is an exciting adventure on the high seas with pirates, monstrous sea creatures and treasure.

Young audiences, aged 3-plus, will be able to follow intrepid explorer Amelia Buttersnap on a journey filled with puppetry and magic.

On Sunday November 29, ‘Old Mother Hubbard and Her Cupboard’ will take children on a nursery rhyme journey as Old Mother Hubbard clatters around her kitchen.

The show has been created by Garlic Theatre, a company that specialises in entertaining families using a blend of slapstick and folk humour. The show is suitable for children aged 3-plus.

Older children will enjoy ‘The Falcon’s Malteser’ based on the comic mystery by Anthony Horowitz.

The show, at Square Chapel on Thursday, October 29 at 6pm, will feature slapstick comedy and a cast of four actors playing 24 different characters.

The plot sees the inept Diamond Brothers Detective Agency on a thrilling quest. There will also be pre-show workshops for children aged 8-plus at 2pm and 4pm. Places must be booked.
