Songs inspired by a mum’s love

Despite setbacks in her musical career - or perhaps because of them - she has pursued her goal with determination.

Now Sadie is on tour promoting her new album ‘London Love Songs’, a collection of new material about her life as a working mother playing and living in the capital.

She will be at Square Chapel arts centre, Halifax, on Sunday, September 20 at 7.30pm.

After a troubled and chaotic childhood, Sadie found solace in music when she took up the guitar at the age of 12.

“I was boarding with a family in Hertfordshire and they had a great record collection. I got to hear people like Joni Mitchell, John Lennon, Bob Dylan and Led Zeppelin.

“It was perfect timing and it was my opening to a new world. I was in such a state of anxiety because I never knew what was going to happen next - and then I discovered music. It was the first thing in my life that made me think everything was going to be OK.”

Sadie’s debut album ‘The Blacksmith’s Girl’ was produced in Los Angeles but her label pulled the plug on it shortly before the release date. Undaunted she took a number of jobs to make a living and two years ago set about writing songs for her second album, ‘London Love Songs’.

She said: “It started as a collection of songs about my life as a working mother playing and living in London. The recordings began life with a few hours of studio time in the magical Abbey Road studio 2 with some exceptionally talented and generous friends.”

Her songs have won praise from Billy Bragg and were featured in the BBC drama ‘In The Club’.
