Shanties ahoy for Wainsgate

Hailing from all parts of the north of England, this 12-strong, all women shanty crew who will be appearing at Wainsgate Chapel this on Saturday (Aug 15) was launched in December 2011 whilst, according to legend, stranded on St Mary’s Island, Whitley Bay.

Since then, they have performed throughout the UK.

She Shanties recently made their international debut in the Netherlands at the Deunen & Deinen shanty festival in Enkhuizen, then this April, they launched their first CD Spanker Boom to great acclaim at the Ellesmere Port Shanty Festival.

As well as being part of the Wainsgate Chapel 2015 concert series, She Shanties’ concert is also a fundraiser for Todmorden Folk Festival which had its highly successful inaugural weekend earlier this year. Also performing will be Alice Jones and Phoebe Ophelia Douthwaite who, in the best folk tradition, will not only be singing some beautiful ballads, but also demonstrating the unusual Appalachian traditions of cranky scrolls and flat-footing.

The concert starts at 3pm and tickets, which are available online at www.todfolkfest.org and at the door, are £10 and £8 with a special price of £3 for those aged 18 and under. Further events at Wainsgate include traditional folk music from virtuoso fiddle player Emma Sweeney and her band, Andrews Sisters-inspired close harmony from The Bobby Pins and a poetry and music double header from former Hebden Bridge performers Jemima Foxtrot and Louis Scott.
