The only real argument against a university in Halifax ('˜Time to revisit university idea for Halifax - letters, November 25) would be the pressures on private rentals of having an influx of new people into the town.

That would have to be addressed, but once it was (creating new jobs as a result), it would only bring prosperity, added culture, cosmopolitan ideas and a more educated and aspirational population.

All sorts of previously duff towns have prospered when they have built universities. It elevates them.

If you want a town centre with shops other than pound shops and charity shops, for example, a large student population will help to support this, as they are less likely to drive to the out of town retail parks.
