West Yorkshire police and crime vote - UKIP concern at '˜invisible' election

UKIP's candidate for police and crime commissioner has voiced his frustration at lack of public awareness about the 'invisible election'.

Peter Allan Gilchrist Corkindale, of the UK Independence Party, is one of five candidates up for election for the post, which has been held by Labour’s Mark Burns-Williamson since 2012.

Votes are being counted this afternoon at Wakefield’s Thornes Park Stadium, with the result expected later today.

People chose their first and second preference candidates for police and crime commissioner at the same time as council election votes were cast yesterday.

Speaking at the election count, Mr Corkindale said: “The problem with this election is it’s been the invisible election. We haven’t had assistance in getting the message across.

“I have done what I can with the resources I have got. But one complaint is that people don’t know who they’re voting for..

But he was optimistic ahead of the result being announced.

The former police officer added: “I’m very encouraged at how many people seem to have voted for me.

“I have a funny feeling that the vote in the PCC election might not necessarily reflect voting in the district council election.”

Mr Burns-Williamson is standing to be re-elected. The other candidates are Conservative Allan Joseph Doherty, Lib Dem Barry Stewart Golton and Therese Hirst, of the English Democrats - “More Police - catching criminals!”
