BRASS and folk were in harmony at the prestigious BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards.

For Yorkshire and National Champion Band Brighouse and Rastrick, the awards ceremony honouring the best achievements in the folk world made an unusual setting.

They were at the Lowry, Salford, to accompany Northumbrian folk group The Unthanks who were nominated for four awards. In 2011 B & R and The Unthanks collaborated on a ground-breaking tour of UK venues which played to sell-out audiences.

The ceremony was broadcast live to Radio 2 audiences and B & R, conducted by Dr Chris Davis, were filmed rehearsing with The Unthanks for the BBC Breakfast programme.

The folk awards were hosted by Mike Harding and Julie Fowlis and on the night the honours went to June Tabor and the Oysterband. Lifetime achievement awards went to singer Don McLean and The Dubliners.

B & R next’s appearance will be at their

Massed Bands concert at Huddersfield Town Hall on March 24. The concert, ‘A Night at the Opera’, will be led by Owain Arwel Hughes and guests will be the award-winning Welsh champions The Cory Band. Tickets are now available from Kirklees ticket outlets or on 01484 223200.
