The under 17s became the second Old Brodleians junior team to reach a Yorkshire Cup final this season with a pulsating 27-26 victory at Huddersfeld YMCA.
The opening exchanges were very even. YM were using their large, powerful forwards to gain ground while Brods looked to use their quick backs and the wide pitch to good effect.
YM made ground through their forwards to take the lead with an unconverted try.
Brods response was swift; a great turnover by Dan Smith resulted in a kick and chase from Ellis Barraclough, who outpaced the defence for a fine score.
Brods’ lineout was functioning well and a catch and drive by the forwards resulted in a try for the impressive Alex Rackstraw.
YM were next on the scoresheet, making it 12-12, but a Brods penalty gave the visitors a three point lead at half-time.
The home side were on the front foot following a poor restart and despite desperate defence, YM took the lead with a converted try under the sticks.
This spurred Brods, who worked the ball well for flying winger Dakota Wylie to score a fine individual try.
Some poor decision making by Brods allowed YM back in for a further converted try, putting the pressure well and truly on the visitors.
However, a clever kick by Tighe Maxwell-Whiteley put Wylie in for his second try in the corner and Maxwell-Whiteley slotted a superb conversion.
The under 13s are the other Brods finalists. They play Wetherby at Dinnington on Sunday (11am).
Brods Under-13s claimed a win and a shutout when they defeated Sheffield 14-0.
Michael Jones and Thackray scored the tries in the second half with Inman converting both scores.
