BRIGHOUSE Rangers Ladies beat Oulton Raiders in the RFL Women’s Plate semi-final last Sunday to book their place in the this coming Sunday’s final at the Halton Stadium, home of Super League club Widnes Vikings (k.o 11.30am)
Following on from two hard fought games during the season, Brighouse knew they would be in for a hard battle. However, still bouyant from their previous game against high flying Wigan St Patricks, it was apparent from the outset that Brighouse had brought their A-game with them.
Hard running from the whole forward pack laid the platform for skilful half-back Emma Hodgson to torment the Oulton defence. Linking up superbly with first Zoe Patchett, then Hayley Machin and finally Laura Dyson to give Rangers a deserved 12 point lead at half time.
The second half carried on much like the first with Oulton’s enthusiastic efforts being thwarted by the Rangers’ tigerish defence. As Brighouse grew in confidence, and with Hodgson continuing to prove a thorn in visitor’s side, they started to show admirable ball handling skills out wide.
This resulted in further tries for centre Claire Waldron, who grabbed a brace, Larissa Deaves and a second for Dyson. Unfortunately Brighouse were unable to add the conversions leaving a score of 28-0.
Oulton never gave up and they were rewarded in the last five minutes with a converted try to full-back Danielle Anderson, ably assisted by Laura Teasdale.
The only blight on the day was a knee injury to hooker Kelly Darragh, which may effect her participation at the weekend.
If anybody is interested in joining the Women’s rugby section at Brighouse, please contact Kelly Darragh on 07749301702. Training is on Tuesday evenings at 6.30pm at Brighouse Sports Club.
