Pride taken as juniors’ success is rewarded

HUDDERSFIELD Golf Club held its Junior Presentation Evening last Thursday and club professional Alex Keighley could not be more proud of the success achieved by youngsters.

The evening began with Mike Dickinson who, with the help of Diane Lockett, Alex and the club’s other professional Jack Pearcey, run the junior section and naturally he took the opportunity to thank everyone for the support he gets including that of Junior Captain Tom North and the parents.

While the junior team did not have much success in the league due to dwindling numbers of teams, individually there has been tremendous success and Megan Clarke has had a memorable season reaching the final of Yorkshire Ladies, winning Yorkshire Girls, third in Northern Girls, 10th in English Girls and winning Lady Captain’s Day at Huddersfield Golf Club.

There was also success for Woodhouse Primary School pupil Jessica Hoskins who, along with Ben Walker, shared a prize of £100 for most improved junior player and that was also recognised for her efforts on a Saturday morning at junior coaching by winning most improved Under-15s for the girls.

Also a pupil at Woodhouse Primary School, Rastrick, Zac Beattie, took the prize for the boys Under-9s most improved player, which capped off a wonderful golfing year for himself when he received an autographed golf cap from his hero Ricky Fowler at St Andrews.

It now sits in a glass box in pride of place in his bedroom.

They received their awards from club President Sue Johnson OBE and captain Nick Ledgard.

The young members that take part in thejunior coaching at the weekend were thrilled to receive their medals and certificates to say they had completed that year’s course.

Normally the boys scoop the cup awarded by Alex Keighley at the end of the year for a team performance, but this year the girls were out and out winners.
