Tennis enthusiasts had a ball when Park Tennis Club held an open day as part of a nationwide initiative.
There were lots of primary school children receiving free coaching and playing organised games at the event, which was created by the Lawn Tennis Association,
The showery weather didn’t dampen the spirits or efforts of the children and in true Wimbledon tradition, cakes, buns and strawberries were enjoyed by players and spectators.
It was a disappointing week in the latest round of Calderdale Tennis League fixtures.
Rain stopped play on the mixed doubles night and there was little to shout about on Thursday when the ladies and men’s doubles matches managed to survive the showers.
Park’s men’s A team lost heavily against Wellholme A and are getting sucked into the relegation area.
The men’s B team lost by three rubbers to one in their Division Three match against Liversedge, with Joe Thornton and Patrick Simpson claiming the point.
In the ladies Division One tie against local rivals Wellholme, Park’s Felicity Raud and Margaret Bottomley battled hard to share their first match before rain intervened and the match was abandoned.
The ladies B team faired a little better, gaining a draw with Cleckheaton who beat them earlier in the season and are one of their promotion rivals in Division Three.
Mona Cade and Jane Colclough won three sets and Kerry Burston and Joanne Hudson won one, leaving Cleckheaton top with Todmorden pushing Park for the other promotion place.
n The sun was shining for Rastrick Tennis Club’s family social day on Sunday and it brought with it really good numbers to the club to experience some tennis, games and food.
Over the course of the day, more than 100 people turned up, some of whom were existing members and players and lots of first timers.
Over 15 pairs of parent and child combinations joined in the mini red doubles competition.
The barbecue and strawberries and cream went down well with all and the club managed to get some new members from the day and wish to thank everyone who pitched in to help to make the event a success .
