Outlane Golf Club held their Junior Open last Friday and the winner of the Non CONGU (Council of National Golf Unions) section was 11-year-old Jessica Head.

Jessica, who has been a member of Huddersfield Golf Club for the last two years and starts Rastrick High School in September, also took part in the Crosland Heath Junior Open the previous week and came second.

Jessica lives in Bradley with her Dad, Richard, a teacher at Parkside High School, Keighley, and is also a member at HuGC, mum Lisa, who is a member at Bradley Park, brother Thomas (23) and sister Bethan (21) who are both non-golfers.

“It was my Dad who got me into playing golf and as well as attending the Junior Coaching on a Saturday morning,” said Jessica.

“I also have a lesson every two weeks with the club professional Alex Keighley and when Dad has time we go out together to play nine holes.

“Since winning on Friday my handicap has now gone down to 39 and I am hoping to work on getting it down even more over the summer, hopefully starting with the Junior Open yesterday at Bradley Hall, Elland.

“I am just playing golf for the enjoyment at the moment and have no dreams of turning professional at the moment, but you never know.

“I am managing to drive the ball around 170 yards at the moment, which is pretty good, and I will keep working on it. I go on the range at the club with Dad and if it’s raining we go to mum’s club under the shelter.

“Dad is very honest with me and really helps out. He tells me when it’s rubbish and when it’s good.”

Jessica says she has made some really good friends at the club, and is well knowm up at HGC amongst the Junior section for always playing in pink, her favourite colour.

“Mum and Dad are really good at managing to find me pink golf clothes and I haven’t got to the point of spending Christmas and Birthday money on golf gear just yet!”

As well as golf, Jessica’s other love is netball and she plays goal shooter for Huddersfield Giants netball team.

The Outlane Open also provided fellow Huddersfield Junior member Daniel Henbest with his first taste of competition.

The seven-year-old Woodhouse Primary School, Rastrick, pupil came a very creditable seventh and registered a par 4 on the 16th hole.

He was the youngest participant on the day and said he had thoroughly enjoyed the experience and would look forward to the Crow Nest Junior Golf Day next Tuesday, August 4.
