THE 2015 tennis season came to a close with the Calderdale Junior Championships being closely contested at three different age groups.

Mini tennis events for children of primary school age were earlier in the summer with St. Chad brother and sister Louis and Holly Hull among the winners.

Once again the boys’ entrants heavily outnumbered the girls. In the Under-13 event, Felicity Raud (Park) beat all but the winner of the boys event, Alfie Caulfield, to claim the girls’ title. Caufield (Queens) beat Daniel Lynch (Rastrick) in the boys Under-13 event. Raud also won the girls Under-18 singles title, beating Tara Hitchen in the final 4-1, 4-0.

The Under-18 boys event was decided when Dominic Simpson (Park) lost to William Henson (Rastrick) after twisting his ankle when the set was poised at 5-4.

Henson went on to win the match and the title, easily defeating all other opponents.

Simpson had to concede his final round robin match, resulting in Curtis Dransfield (Rastrick) being runner up.

The Under-16 competition attracted the biggest number of entrants with players from clubs across the Calderdale Tennis League area taking part.

Morgan Coles (Cleckheaton) recovered from a poor start to take his place in the final after beating Tom Haley (Queens) in a tie-break shoot-out after identical records in the round robin stage.

Eddie Uttley (Rastrick) and Matthew Bottomley (Wellholme) played well and were unlucky not to progress from the group stages. In the final, Coles came up against Chris Coates (Queens), but by this time Coles was on top form and he won a high quality set by 4-1.
