LAST week’s Saturday Stableford at Willow Valley Golf Club threw up a big surprise when 14-year-old Alex Walker registered what they think could be the highest stableford points in the club’s history.
The Mirfield Free Grammar pupil has been a member of the club for the past three years and is also a member at Dewsbury Golf Club.
“I can’t play enough to be honest and really love the game,” enthused Alex. “At the moment I am playing twice a week and when it is the school holidays it is seven days a week
“My dad plays and so do my brothers, we are all fans of the game. I quit playing football for Norristhorpe and my school to concentrate on playing golf.
“I used to have lessons, but not for a while now. It is something I would like to get back into but I am in my GCSE’s years at school now and really need to focus on that. I do, however, want to turn professional in the game and really look up to players like Jordan Speith and Rory McIlroy.”
With Christmas only six weeks away it is also very easy for Alex’s parents to know what to get him!
“For Christmas and birthdays I always like to get new golf clubs, shoes or shirts to wear.
“I am sure I will need them for when I start playing in competitions again next year.
“I was really pleased when I got my results back after handing in my card last week. I have played in a few competitions this year but that was most definitely the best I have played.
“I felt confident before I went out.
“I am looking forward to some more junior opens next year and I always like playing in the one at Crow Nest Golf Club.”
Neil McBride from the Clifton-based club said: “Up and coming Alex returned a stunning score of 49.
“His scratch score of 77 at the age of just 14 is an amazing achievement.”
