Brighouse Town Ladies made the trip to Hull to face league leaders Hessle Town, anticipating a tough fixture against a team who had previously played three and won three.
However, they produced a stirring performance and hit the ambitious club with a 12-goal blitz.
Town themselves had only played the one game due to their FA Cup involvement, and that scoreline was a 7-0 demolition of Sheffield United.
Town welcomed back Claire Needham, who was included for the first time after recovering from a heel injury, and a most welcome addition ahead of this Sunday’s crunch tie against Barnsley at the Dual Seal Stadium.
Town have made a habit of starting quick this season and, as well as their steely defence, they’ve added goals to their game, making them very dangerous opposition.
A similar story unfolded here as Rachael White opened the scoring in the 10th minute.
Annabelle Cass then doubled the lead soon after followed by Jodie Redgrave and Amy Hesselden finding the back of the net to make it 4-0.
Two more goals in two minutes before half-time from White and Hesselden ensured a 6-0 lead at the break, by which stage the game was over as a contest and it was a case of how many they would score.
On the resumption it wasn’t until the 58th minute that Town added to their lead, White completing her hat-trick.
Captain Yasmin Ayub was next to get in on the action, followed by a Jordane Allison strike to make it 9-0.
Hessle managed to grab a consolation goal very much against the run of play but Kayleigh Bamforth made it 10-1 followed by Needham and Cass completing the route. a convincing 12-1 which in truth could have been more.
Town host Barnsley, who are themselves top now after the weekend’s results, and have to be classed as Town’s biggest threat to the title. The game is on this Sunday at the Dual Seal Stadium, 2pm and admission is FREE.
