Second side denied in Junior Cup

Linthwaite U13 4
Brighouse Juniors B 3

On a mudbath pitch for this Huddersfield Junior League Cup tie, Brighouse came up short against opponents from three divisions above them.

Brighouse fell behind in the 10th minute to a well-worked goal, but were level within 10 minutes when Will Bakes turned in a Callum Higgins cross.

Five minutes later, Brighouse were awarded a penalty for handball, but it was put wide. This spurred on Linthwaite, who within two minutes regained the lead when a speculative shot from 35 yards hit the top corner.

Brighouse pushed for an equaliser with man of the match Tom Dawson at the heart of everything. Jamie McCrink and his stroke partner Bakes were denied on a number of occasions by the keeper and Brighouse were made to pay for these squandered opportunities when the home side scored a third just before the break.

The second half saw Brighouse on the front foot, but with 20 minutes left, it was Linthwaite who again showed their clinical side, scoring on the counter-attack.

Brighouse refused to give up, however and, with 10 minutes left, a Barney Garside corner was forced into the net by Sam Oates to bring it back to 4-2. With three minutes left Dawson broke up the right wing 60 yards from goal and forced his way through four tackles before chipping over the keeper to make it 4-3.

With time running out Joshua Scott and Joseph Moore combined to set up a shooting opportunity for Bakes but, again, the home defenders stood firm.
