BRIGHOUSE went to the top of the league after a thrilling game aganst league leaders Brayton.

Brighouse had the perfect start when Leanne Smith’s through ball found Vanessa Holroyd and she calmly finished from six yards. Brighouse continued to dominate and play some lovely football and Vanessa Holroyd and Emily Holroyd both went close.

Then from a Charlotte Reid corner Lauren Doyle smashed a header against the bar. Brayton came back into the game and after a series of corners they forced the ball over the line despite the efforts of Chloe Abbott and keeper Amy Monday.

Brayton grew in confidence and despite some great defending from Alex Sweeney, Leanne Webster, Sheridan Drake and Abbott they took the lead when Brighouse again failed to clear a corner.

Brighouse started the second half strongly with Chalotte Reid, Leanne Smith, Lauren Doyle, Sarah Hemingway and Emily Holroyd linking well and causing problems for the Brayton defence, and in the 49th minute they levelled when Smith’s free kick fell to Lauren Doyle on the edge of the area and she rifled the ball into the bottom corner.

And 10 minutes later they regained the lead in this exciting encounter with a superb goal. The ball fell to Smith 25 yards out and she had one touch before firing a left footed shot into the top corner.

But within seconds Brayton were level when a cross from the right fell to the striker who scored from close range.

Once again Brayton gained the upper hand and Brighouse had keeper Monday to thank with two one-on-one saves.

But with minutes remaining Brighouse started pushing for the win and Smith raced through the Brayton defence only to see the ball crash back off the bar to safety.

Then Holroyd raced through only to see her shot deflected just past the post, but from the resulting corner Reid’s inch perfect cross was bundled over the line by Lauren Doyle for a dramatic last minute win.

Brighouse are now two points clear at the top of the league with three wins in three games. On Sunday they travel to local rivals Bradford Park Avenue at the Horsfall Stadium in the Women’s FA Cup kick off 2pm.
