Brighouse Town’s development team hit back in style after conceding two early goals.
First-team squad members Tom Robinson, Adam Field, Matt Stor and Izzy Johnson came into the side along with Marcus Hadfield from the Under-18s.
Pontefract went ahead after two minutes and, after Robinson and Sheiden Rodgers had gone close, they made it 2-0 after 20 minutes.
Town reacted with Field converting from Rodgers’s corner on 26 minutes. Two minutes later, Rodgers turned scorer as he struck a vicious shot from 25 yards into the corner. Four minutes later, Robinson converted from a very good counter attack to make it 3-2.
Pontefract fought back and grabbed an equaliser just before half-time following a long ball which Field turned into his own net.
The message at half-time was to cut out gifting the opposition goals and keep attacking.
Brighouse responded by scoring almost instantaneously on 46 minutes with a precise header from Rodgers after great delivery from Robinson. .
Hadfield came on at 55 minutes to make his debut and was very impressive for a 16-year-old in the middle of the park.
Jack Normanton was brought on five minutes later during a quiet spell.
The substitute seemed to ignite the game with Town scoring the best goal on the night after a one-touch move involving fsix players tore Colls apart and was finished well by Ashley Scully on 61 minutes.
Normanton added to the tally on 70 minutes after another good move.
Robinson added another on 72 minutes with a close-range volley to make it 7-3.
Hadfield’s audacious back heel resulted in an own goal four minutes later.
Brighouse showed no signs of slowing down and, after good chances fell for Scully, Rodgers and Normanton, they finally ended their second-half scoring rout on 85 minutes with Robinson completing his hat-trick from the penalty spot.
