A 70-year-old cyclist is fighting for his life in hospital after coming off his bike in Halifax last night (Thursday).

Police were called to the A58 Godley Lane near the BP petrol station just after midnight to help the man, believed to be from Bailiff Bridge.

He suffered serious head injuries and was taken to Huddersfield Royal Infirmary.

His condition was today described as critical.

The man was travelling with a group of other cyclists along Godley Lane and was at Stump Cross, when he lost control of his bicycle, falling and sustaining serious head injuries.

Police are now appealing for anyone who saw the cyclist prior to, or at the time of the collision to contact them. They are also keen to speak to anyone who stopped at the scene of the incident. The group of cyclists had earlier been cycling through Mytholmroyd, late last night.

Anyone with information about the accident should contact Sgt Garry Alderson at the Mayor Collision Enquiry Team on 01924 293047 or via 101.
