There has been a positive response to the introduction of 20mph limits in residential areas.
Residents made their way made their views know, at one of the consultations meeting held at Brighouse Civic Hall, about the Council’s plans to introduce the restrictions.
The council wants to know which of the following options residents prefer, continue with the current scheme of introducing two or more restrictions each year in specific areas, introduce 20mph speed limits outside schools or introduce 20mph speed limits in all residential areas.
Bridget Kusyj from the road safety department said people mainly wanted clarification on the first option. “The option will not include implementing them on all the major roads. So in an area like Hove Edge it will probably mean that most of it would be 20mph apart from Halifax Road. “The second question we have been getting is what it means just outside schools. The reality is that outside schools you have parked cars that act as a road safety measure so if someone was involved in an accident the injuries they will sustain are likely to be less severe. We want to reduce the severity of an accident and make Calderdale a nice place to live so children can go out and feel like they can walk about.
“The majority of people have been really supportive of having 20mph in their area but they want to know what it means for their area rather than the whole of Calderdale. We have been reassured that 20mph is something they would like to have.
“Another question is how it will be enforced. It will not be policed anymore than what it is. They have limited resources but if the 20mph is appropriate and in some areas vehicles are proving to be going very fast residents can always report it and we can go out and enforce it.”
She said that if it is deemed appropriate for an area, the police, Metro, schools and other agencies will then be asked for their opinions. This could change the make up of the roads included in the restrictions, some could be removed and others added, or other traffic calming measures could be used.
They will also look at added extras such as street lighting particularly on routes close to schools or pavement improvements as was done in Elland.
Ms Kusyj said feedback from other 20mph limits had been encouraging and figures had been maintained or come down slightly.
“I think this has given us a lot of interesting discussions and we have been able to provide a lot of information to people that they might not have had previously or confirmed things they thought was correct,” she said.
People will be able to make their views known at the ward forums until the end of January.
