Parking sparks fears about road safety

Parking along Bradford Road is becoming a major problem says a Brighouse councillor.

Councillor Colin Stout (Ind) said it was particularly bad from Wellholme Park to Brighouse Police Station.

“People cannot park in Tesco now because of the restrictions, and for people visiting the park there is no designated parking. It is becoming a victim of its own success,” he said. “We need to take a good look and see how we can manage the traffic there. It is an area we really need to focus on.”

Sergeant Dean Maddocks, who leads the Lower Valley Neighbourhood Policing Team, said over the last 14 months they had issued 35 tickets for causing obstruction some for parking on the pavements and others for being too close to a junction.

“When it started to be a problem about 12 months ago we was told by highways that they needed figures. Now we have gone a lot higher up the list and we will be looking at the permanent restrictions on the roads over the next six months,” he said.

“People don’t realise that you can get a ticket if you are parking on the pavement because it can be an obstruction especially if people are being forced to walk in the road.

“Especially from the police station we are having problems getting to emergencies because of parking near to the station. I would just appeal to people to use their common sense.”
