FORMER Hipperholme Grammar School student Laura Galley and her partner Lee Jones are organising Calderdale’s first Strongest Man competition.
The duo are currently looking for competitors to compete in the competition which will take place on May 12 and 13 at Hipperholme Grammar School between 10am and 4pm on both days.
Lee, aged 25, came up with the idea after removing bathroom fittings for his sister. “Quite a lot of strenuous work was involved and after talking about it with Laura we decided to organise an event and aim to make it a fun day,” he said.
There will be a variety of events throughout the weekend. On Saturday there is the medley race, the crucifix hold, the farmers walk, and the trunk pull. The following day there is the overhead press, the car deadlift, and the atlas stones.
“Only the really strong lads are going to be able to lift the atlas stones towards the end but that is the idea,” said Lee.
“When you are training it can get quite tough so hopefully this competition will give them something to aim towards and give them a sense of achievement.”
Laura said there will be a podium style finish with prizes donated by local businesses. There will also be a charity aspect to the day. “One of my friends lost her little boy to leukaemia and we are now raising money for the Candlelighters. Some of the proceeds will go towards the charity and they will be having a stall,” she said.
The army recruiting team will be helping on the day by refereeing. There is something for everyone at the event including a bouncy castle, face painting, a photographer, and stalls from local businesses.Tickets for the weekend cost £7 or they can be bought on the gate. To compete it will cost £25 and the deadline is May 5. For more information call Laura on 07715586588 or Lee on 07530781253.
