Staff at a Brighouse charity shop were left reeling after flood water poured into the premises just two days before their biggest fund-raising event of the year.
But thanks to the efforts of volunteers and offers of help from the Brighouse community, the Overgate Hospice shop’s annual Glitz and Glamour evening went ahead on Tuesday and raised £1,500 - more than last year’s total.
Manager Jacqueline Yates said: “I can’t believe how we managed to turn such a negative experience into a positive. We were so shocked when we arrived on Monday morning and were wading through water.
“The wonderful window display with a Diamonds are Forever theme that was only finished on Saturday was completely ruined but fortunately the designer clothes for the evening were safe.”
Water cascaded through the ceiling of the shop on Thornton Square, Brighouse, bringing down tiles and flooding the floor.
“As I opened the door water came rushing out. It was pitch black but I didn’t dare put the light on to see what was happening,” said Jacqueline.
Thanks to offers of help from Prego’s restaurant, the Glitz and Glamour evening was held on Tuesday and supporters turned out in force to help the event go with a swing.
“I am just so grateful to everyone at Prego’s and everyone who came along. This is one of out major fundraisers of the year and is very popular with people looking for bargains.
“We are thrilled that it went ahead as planned.”
Overgate Hospice is also holding a Glitz and Glam day on Saturday, November 23 from 10am to 4pm at its shop in Southgate, Halifax.
