Brighouse singer Roger Davies has climbed into the saddle to capture the spirit of the world’s greatest cycle race.
Roger, who admits he has not ridden a bike since he was about 10, said he found the mood of excitement generated by next year’s Tour de France was inspirational.
Le Grand Depart marks the start of the Tour in Yorkshire next July. The race will pass through Hebden Bridge, Mytholmroyd and Elland.
“I’m not a keen cyclist myself but Le Tour really seems to have captured the public imagination. There’s a great mood of anticipation and excitement and I really hope I’ve captured that in my song ‘The Grand Depart’.
“It’s now part of my regular act and it seems to go down really well with audiences.
“In a way I suppose you could say it’s a typical Roger Davies song with a feelgood celebratory lyric delivered in a straightforward style.
“There’s a line in the song about it being ‘two extraordinary days at the races’, and that’s what it will be like. I never thought an event like the Tour de France would come through my backyard with the whole world watching - and that’s worth celebrating.”
Roger, 36, is giving two concerts with special guests in the Green Room Bar at the Victoria Theatre, Halifax, on Thursday, November 28 and Saturday, November 30, in response to public demand for tickets. The doors open at 7.30pm and the shows start at 8pm.
“I’ve given a concert there for the past couple of years and last year it was a complete sell-out so they asked me to give two performances this time. I will be performing ‘The Grand Depart’ and I hope people will come along and hear it.”
Roger is also lined up to give performances at the Blue Cat Cafe, Stockport, on December 5, the Victoria Hall, Settle, on December 14 and Cellar 88 in Holmfirth on December 21.
He has also been giving songwriting workshops to local schools and his new song, ‘Wear Your Poppy with Pride’ was performed with children from Shelley First School near Huddersfield at their service of remembrance .
Next year two of Roger’s previous albums, ‘Northern Trash’ and ‘The Busker’, are being released in a special double edition CD package called ‘The Yorkshire Songwriter’.
