POLICE targeted commercial vehicles in random vehicle checks in Bradford Road, Brighouse.
Officers from the Lower Valley Neighbourhood Policing Team joined experts from HM Revenue and Customs, HM Court Services, VOSA and Calderdale’s Road Policing Unit to carry out checks on lorries and small vans.
They checked around 40 vehicles in total. They included a lorry that was found to be running on illegal red diesel. The driver was fined £500.
A car was seized for being on the road with no insurance and several fine-dodgers were identified.
Sergeant Dean Maddocks, who led the operation, said they were also able to gather intelligence about known offenders.
“We set up the operation in response to an increase in thefts of scrap metal in the Lower Valley and concerns from the public.
“I think we’ve sent a strong message out to offenders and members of the public that the Lower Valley Neighbourhood Policing Team want to disrupt these people’s activities.”
He urged anyone in the Lower Valley who noticed people acting suspiciously to call police on 0845 6060606.
