Lively Southowram centenarian celebrates 100th birthday

A lively Southowram centenarian is celebrating her 100th birthday today (Wednesday).

Dorothy Maude (nee King) was born on April 28, 1921 to Fred and Ivy King, the eldest of three daughters born in Buckden Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire.The family moved to Sunny Vale, Hipperholme in 1927 where her parents were caretakers.

Later Dorothy was called up into the Auxiliary Territorial Service as a lorry driver where she stayed for four and a half years.

After coming out of the forces Dorothy met Leonard Maude and the pair got married in 1945.

They had three children, David, Susan and Christine and the family moved to Southowram, where Dorothy still lives.

Sadly her husband Leonard died when he was 57 and then lost her eldest child David aged 45.

Dorothy has gone on to have fourgrandsons and five great grand children .

Before the coronavirus pandemic Dorothy enjoyed going out for meals with her family and nights out at Southowram club. Her family say she’s still a very lively centenarian.
