Natalie Hayton and partner Sarah Maughan have been in a month now at the Duke of York, Shelf and have certainly hit the ground running.

Manager Natalie said:“The pub was pretty much ready to go after a spring clean but the kitchen was slightly delayed while we got it to standard ready to serve food.”

After leaving the Sun Inn, Rastrick, the couple took a holiday while waiting to take over the pub.

Natalie added: “The regional manager for Enterprise Inns knew we wanted a food pub so when they mentioned this we decided to go for it.”

Sarah has been a chef for eight years and the pub is putting itself on the map as it’s taking numerous bookings and walk-ins each week to enjoy their rustic pub food menu.

Through the week they have grill night on a Tuesday with any two meals from the grill menu priced at £20. Wednesday is pie night, two pie meals for £12 and Friday is fish day with again two meals for £12.

On a Sunday they offer a traditional roast for £8.95 per head.

On the main menu there are things like steaks, scampi, fish and chips, burgers and pies for example.

They also have children’s menu available and vegetarian options.

Food serving times are Tuesday to Saturday noon to 4pm and evenings 5pm to 9pm. On a Sunday it is noon to 6pm.

On the bar they have two hand-pulled ales, Timothy Taylor’s Landlord and Saltaire Blonde.

As winter approaches Natalie is also looking at bringing in a dark ale as a guest.

A disco and karaoke has been introduced on a Friday, a quiz night on Wednesdays, which is £1 per person to enter and includes a supper, a free round of drinks for the winning team and the chance to go for the cash jackpot prize which will roll over weekly if not won.

This Friday there is live music from Big Licks who will play anything from the Beatles through to Hendrix, and Natalie will be looking to have live music once a month.

The outside of the pub this week had a colourful lift with some professional bright coloured signage boards.

“Trade has picked up since we came in and word of mouth is getting around about the food so it’s all promising.

“We now have the Christmas menus available and people are already booking for Christmas Day,” added Natalie.

Tonight (Thursday) at The Barge the weekly jam session is with the Psychoslinkys, then on Friday night they have Dirty Souls.

On Saturday evening Silence will be on stage and on Sunday the Black Cat Trio will entertain.

The Holiday Inn, Brighouse, is getting into the Christmas spirit as they launched their brochure offering Christmas parties from as little as £13 per head.

They have on offer a selection of party nights with a three course meal and disco which can be private or made up of several groups.

You can join them for a meal on Christmas Day, Boxing Day or New Year’s Day plus they are holding Christmas festive lunches with the chance of a visit from Father Christmas for the kids.
