Initially inspired by a food collection organised by staff for a local Sure Start centre, George decided to organise regular donations to the Brighouse Central Foodbank. The first donation took place just before Christmas and the hospital continues to do so every month.

George said: “I wanted to do something good for the community because times have been hard. I know what it’s like not to have food and stuff. The idea that I could help too just appeared to me and I said let’s do it.”

Miriam Sykes, Senior Occupational Therapist explained how the project had benefited George.

“He’s been really proud of what he’s achieved and has shared the experience with his friends and family. It is also giving him some ideas for the future including fundraising and a sponsored walk.”

She added: “We are always trying to build links with other people in the community, not only to look at volunteering opportunities but also to give back to the community as well. If there are ways we can help, then we would love to contribute to the local community, especially at this difficult time.”

The donation has been well received by the foodbank and once restrictions start to be eased, George is hoping to do volunteering work at the foodbank. He is also planning to get a Food Hygiene Certificate so that he can increase the level of help he gives.
