FOR almost 10 years Brighouse Rotary Club’s Tree of Light has provided a focus for remembrance in the town centre at Christmas.

The first tree was inaugurated by Chris Redfearn, then president of the club, in 2003 and funds raised from the sponsorship money is donated every year to charity.

This year the Calderdale branch of the Alzheimer’s Society was the chosen charity and a total of £2,440 was raised.

The lights were switched on the tree outside Sainsbury’s in Brighouse by Coun Christine Beal, deputy Mayor of Calderdale, with a dedication by Canon Michael Storey of Rastrick.

Mr Redfearn said: “The project was successful once again but sponsored lights were very clearly down on previous years. It is difficult to say why this was.

“However our collection days at Sainsburys and Tesco were the best ever and made up for the sponsored light shortfall. Many people putting money in our buckets obviously felt that the Alzheimer’s Society is a very worthwhile cause.

“The disease affects a great many people whether directly or indirectly through relatives and friends.”
