Men urged to Run For It – for a good cause

THE Round Table is organising its third men-only 5km charity fun run to raise funds and awareness of cancers that affect men.

Brighouse Round Table organised the first run held at Greenhead Park, Huddersfield, and this year's event is at the same venue on Sunday, September 21, starting at 11am.

Men of all ages and fitness levels are invited to sign up and those who want to take part need to register by next Friday, September 12.

The event will raise cash for Cancer Research UK and tell people about the cancers which affect men, especially prostate and testicular cancers. The last two year's events raised just under 15,000 in sponsorship money.

Run For It organiser Nigel Watson, of Brighouse, said: "Over the years we have supported our wives and partners at the successful ladies-only Race for Life event. There was nothing similar for us blokes to join in with, so we decided to do something about it. We have been chuffed with the response to the last two year's fun runs and this year we want to get even more men involved."

"The fun run is open to lads under 18-year-old if they are supervised by a responsible adult. The oldest entrant so far is 75-years-old and the youngest just one-year-old. People don't have to run to take part – many of the entrants last year walked the course, some in fancy dress – but still felt good for taking part."

Cancer Research UK community fund-raiser Andrea Membe said: "In the UK a man is diagnosed with cancer roughly every four minutes. Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men. Testicular cancer is relatively rare but is the most common cancer in men aged 15 to 45. This event will be a great way to raise awareness and also help raise money to support Cancer Research UK's vital work to prevent, diagnose and treat men's cancers."
