Rastrick Guides have joined a special launch of a new resource to empower girls to make a difference to the world around them.
Second and fourth Rastrick Guides, along with leader Fiona Roberts, travelled to London’s Google Campus for the event. The Be The Change resource was developed by Isabelle Mahoney, 16, and Amy Carmichael, 19, two members of Girlguiding’s The Senior Section. Both attended the Girls’ World Forum in Chicago in 2012 and came back buzzing with ideas for putting what they’d learned into action.
Isabelle said: “Be The Change is all about getting every girl within Girlguiding to realise her true and full potential. We hope it will provide young women with the confidence they need to speak up about issues that matter to them and their community, so they can start to lead an influential life and play their part in changing the world for the better.”
Activities are designed to help make girls’ voices heard at all levels. It gives them skills in leadership, decision-making, debating and advocacy. During the event guides had the chance to take part in interactive workshops which covered topics including Powerful Women; You As Political Animal and A Campaign Of Your Own.
Amy Whittington, 14, said: “I am inspired to encourage others to help and I am going to research more to find out more about the ways in which I can help to change my community.”
