A LANDLADY has been left counting the costs after she claims her tenant did a moonlight flit.
Tina Newsome said she is out of pocket by nearly £4,000 after her tenant left the property on a street in Brighouse.
She said she would have to spend another £100 of issuing a claim through the small claims court for the money.
Tina said the house was left in a “disgusting” state which included a smashed electric socket, approximately 20 bin bags of junk that had to be collected by the council, unwashed children’s clothes and rotting food in the child’s bedroom.
Tina said the female tenant was claiming housing benefit and despite Tina being left out of pocket for the rent, the money could not be paid directly to her and had to go to the tenant herself.
“We had done all the relevant checks including character references through an estate agents so even that is no protection,” said Tina, who has written to Calder Valley MP Craig Whittaker about the situation.
“We have had the house for seven years and all the other tenants and the ones in now have been brilliant. We have never had a problem but I don’t want anyone else to go through this and have to walk in to the mess I did.
“She broke all the terms of her contract and apparently there is nothing we can do about it. I just want people to be aware of what is going on and if they feel strongly about it write to your MP.”
